Benefitting individuals with autism and related disabilities throughout Florida!
The Autism Services Grants Council was authorized by the Florida Legislature in 2009 to implement and oversee a grants process for the distribution of funds generated from the sales of the Florida Support Autism Programs Specialty License Plate.
The Florida Legislature approved only one new specialty license plate in 2009 — the Support Autism Programs Specialty Plate. Kudos to the many advocates from the Autism Society and the CARD Centers who participated in the early evolution of this plate in past few years setting the stage for Consultant and former State Representative Susan Goldstein, one of the State’s most tenacious advocates and parent of a child with autism, to work ‘miracles’ to achieve passage. At the end of the day, with some help from Dan Marino and the staunch support and commitment of State of Florida Representative David Rivera, State of Florida Representative Richard Glorioso, and House Speaker Larry Cretul it was passed.
The primary purpose of the Council is to fund service programs for grants to nonprofit organizations to operate direct services programs for individuals with autism and related disabilities in Florida including direct services, evaluation, training, and awareness. Consideration for participation in such services and programs must be given to applicants who are children or adults with autism and related disabilities and their families and shall include those who are on the Agency for Persons with Disabilities waiting lists for services.
The amount of funds available through the grant process will be dependent of the amount of revenue generated by sales of the Florida Support Autism Programs Specialty License Plate which went on sale in mid November, 2009. |
